Telling the story of local woodland

I have been working in and around woods since 2003. Over the years I have been involved with commercial forestry, woodland management, mobile timber milling and local tree surgery work. Since 2012 I have been more focused on making functional art out of the timber I come across.

The grain and pattern of the wood tells a story, each event a tree experiences is captured and wrapped up within itself.

Every years growth leaves its record in the wood. Knots and damage send ripples through the surrounding tissue, the ripples spread outwards and damage is wrapped up and sealed inside, leaving its own record as decay sets in and cavities form. Eventually fungi take over and add a new layer of intricacies and wonder.

My work is mainly influenced by revealing these features and using them in a way which is both beautiful and functional, to pay homage to these events that shaped the tree and keep the memory of the tree alive.

I love to make use of wood from big, old trees that have unfortunately come to the end of their lives. My wood is locally sourced and comes from woodlands I have been involved in managing, local tree surgery works and storm felled specimen trees. They are almost all trees that I have met personally and they all have a story to tell....
