Ali Scott
I am a felt artist with a passion for creating colourful, vibrant felt ‘paintings,’ inspired by a love of the natural world.
I am primarily what is known as a ‘wet felter’ and enjoy the challenges of this process. I love to ‘paint’ with the ‘wool tops’ (dyed, carded fleece) incorporating plant fibres, fabric and spun yarn to enhance the texture of a piece. It can take many hours to ‘lay out’ a design and when it is complete, the wet felting begins: a little soap and warm water is added, pressure is applied through rubbing and rolling and the transformation begins. As the fibres mat together the resulting fabric is worked vigorously to strengthen and shrink it and when it is dry, all is revealed. It’s like magic! Working with fleece and fibre can seem deceptively simple, yet has infinite possibilities and that’s what excites me.
The diverse landscape of Wales provides a constant source of inspiration with its seasonal shifts, changing light, colours and textures. I’m a bit obsessed with trees, hares and traditional cottages too.
All work is stretched onto a canvas covered wooden frame for ease of hanging.
