One of a Kind Burr Oak Dining Table

Talented local woodworker Roni Roberts shares with us her process for crafting a magnificent burr oak table

This burr Oak table is made from a single slab of oak. It is nearly 7 foot long. The exact length is 6’9” (2060mm). The table is 3’ (930mm) wide and the height is 2’7” (790mm). The oak tree came from Dryslwyn, near Carmarthen and was only felled after it had died. The trunk was planked by my partner and myself using a double ended chainsaw with a milling attachment. Here is a video of this double ended chainsaw in use.

The figuring on the table top is exceptional. This photo shows one detail where an old branch was sawn off and the tree has grown round it. Isn't it wonderful? Isn't nature wonderful?

The metal legs give a simplicity to the table and because they are so much stronger than wooden legs they are less in the way. Eight chairs, including arm chairs, can fit around and tucked under the table.

These painted steel legs were made by Barry Evans Metalwork, Newcastle Emlyn. There is a different style of metal legs on the Ash table upstairs. I am also in the process of making one with wooden legs which will be much heavier so have a very different feel about it.

The table top is finished with Treatex Hardwax oil. This could then be wax polished or another coat of Hardwax oil could be applied if and when necessary.

The table will be in the window until Monday 6th April. It will then be moved into the shop, upstairs. It is not feasible to sell the table before then. Please come to see it properly after removal from the window. I have four slabs from this tree so am able to make a similar table. There will then never be another. There is also several bowls in the window made from the same wood.

I asked Kings Furnishings (based in Bryngwyn near Newcastle Emlyn) about possible delivery. They delivered an item to Carmarthen recently and charged £50.00. (Phone 01239 711058.)
