January, Siramik Pottery

After having experienced the January Blues for a couple of days and allowing myself to “Chill

out” for a couple more, it is back to work…… and what kind of work!!

Looking around in the potter’s studio I thought some maintenance was due so I have spent

the last 4 days sanding, varnishing, sanding and varnishing again the lovely wooden table

and other surfaces we use which were made by a very competent carpenter about 25 years

ago. Solid surfaces that get a lot of hard work on them with all the wedging, cutting,

slapping, shaping etc.

The first orders have also come in and it is just wonderful to sit behind the potter’s wheel

and creating. The sheer movement from being a ball of clay and transforming it through

your hands into a useful practical object is what it is all about. There is a constant

conversation going on when you are throwing and every movement of the hand and fingers

has a consequence and a to and fro conversation between the clay and the potter.

Book keeping is also what comes along in my small business and loving the creating side, it is

not my strongest incentive to sit down and do this but….. needs must. So time has been

spent on this too during the last couple of weeks. January is a lovely quiet time for a potter,

all the Christmas markets have been done, festivity days are over and everybody is taking

stock of how to proceed for the new year. A time to play as well, to try out new shapes,

designs, colours, decoration….love it, love it, love it.

Full speed ahead now to create enough stock for the outlets who sell my ceramics and the

sheer joy of looking forward to it fills me with gratitude that I am able to do this. What a

way to go to work!!!
